My journey into the world of cybersecurity is one of determination and resilience. I had dropped out of Secondary Vocational Education school, yet I found my way into IT in the late 1990s. It was in the early 2000s that I began to focus on cybersecurity, a field that was just beginning to emerge as critical to the digital age. From that point on, I embarked on a remarkable career, holding various positions in information security.
I started as a Security Analyst, delved into audit roles, and eventually took on leadership responsibilities. Over the years, I managed and led cybersecurity practices for multiple organizations, including ABN AMRO Clearing Bank and other government institutions in the Netherlands. I also contributed to charities, including one of the world’s largest after the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Despite my accomplishments, I always felt there was more to achieve. Having earned multiple certifications like C|CISO, C|EH, E|CSA, L|PT C|NDA, CIPT, CCSP, PCS, CIPM, CHFI, CISM, CISA, CRISC, CGEIT and CISSP —many of them prestigious EC-Council certifications—I realized these credentials, while valuable, were not enough. I wanted something more comprehensive that would allow me to refine my skills further and enhance my critical thinking and leadership abilities.

In 2015, an opportunity presented itself when I was admitted to EC-Council University to pursue a Master of Science in Cybersecurity degree program. By 2017, I had successfully completed the program, and it has profoundly impacted my professional and personal growth.

From ethical hacking to organizational leadership, the coursework provided me with a holistic understanding of cybersecurity. This blend of technical and managerial content was both challenging and rewarding, equipping me with the skills needed to excel in diverse roles.
Although balancing work and studies was demanding, it was ultimately satisfying. The rigorous program required dedication, but the support from EC-Council University’s faculty and staff made the journey manageable.
The Importance of Balance
Being a security specialist, particularly a CISO, is not just a job—it’s a way of life. Maintaining balance is essential to thriving in this field. Personally, I practice Aikido to manage stress and maintain a clear mindset. Activities like yoga, meditation, or even simply eating healthy and getting enough sleep are equally vital in ensuring long-term success.
This sense of balance was mirrored in the program’s structure, which allowed me to grow academically without sacrificing my well-being.
My Favorite Aspects of the Program
One of the most enjoyable parts of Master of Science in Cyber Security degree was writing research papers and receiving critical feedback. These exercises challenged me to think analytically and express my ideas clearly. The process of crafting well-researched papers helped me grow as a person and as a professional.
Graduating felt like a significant achievement—a moment of triumph that symbolized the hard work and dedication I had invested over two years.
Evaluating the Program
The quality of education at EC-Council University is exceptional. The faculty consists of industry experts who bring real-world experience to their teaching, making the curriculum highly relevant and practical. The course materials were comprehensive, including videos, additional readings, and prompt feedback on assignments.
The support from the university was also outstanding. Despite the time difference—living in the Netherlands meant an eight-hour gap—I always received timely responses to my queries. Faculty members were even available on weekends, which was incredibly helpful.
