For most international students, EC-Council University’s (ECCU) world-class Cyber Security degree programs are a gateway to the fulfilment of their dreams. However, Pieter’s story is a little different, for these programs gave him a chance to turn adversity into opportunity.
At 50, the South African National Defence Force veteran was back to the drawing board when his position as “Business Resilience and Security Advisor” became redundant. A restructuring process at the international company, where he had been working, put him out of work.
Inspiringly enough, instead of feeling hopeless, Pieter decided to pursue his dream to become a cyber security professional. He researched online cyber security courses and reached the EC-Council University. Pieter had been looking for a reputable and accredited institute of higher learning that had a flexible yet relevant curriculum catering to the needs of the industry. Cyber security is a functional domain and requires mandatory practical lessons. To Pieter’s content, EC-Council University satisfied all these criteria along with providing a safe and protected platform—the iLabs, the live online cyber range where students can practice their newly found skills without fear of breaking any laws or systems.
After a discussion with Renuka, Admissions Advisor at ECCU, Pieter decided to use his severance package for a cyber security degree program at the EC-Council University. In the discussion, he also mentioned that the operational side of a university cannot function if it is not backed by a solid foundation, which ECCU has. He further explored that the university is also equipped with a strong and dynamic administrative functionality and that the administration wants the students to succeed.
Pieter now calls himself a professional student and plans to relaunch his career in the cyber security field.
Having been in the military, Pieter values integrity and ethics above all. As a student, he takes the demands of the degree program at ECCU in his stride and enjoys the interactions with the faculty and his fellow students, leveraging the learning opportunity to its full extent.
Abel Daniel, Director for Admissions & Student Support, commented, “I love the way Pieter calls himself a professional student. We’re really proud to have a student like him with us.”
This one interesting remark Pieter made defines his journey, “the proof of the pudding is in the eating.”
We wish him luck in all his endeavours!
